Tens of thousands of people have called for jobless rioters and looters to lose their benefit payments. A petition on the No.10 website, which had attracted 90,000 signatures by this morning, demands offenders surrender their state handouts if they are convicted of disorder. It states:

‘No taxpayer should have to contribute to those who have destroyed property, stolen from their community and shown a disregard for the country that provides for them.’

If 100,000 people sign the campaign, it will trigger a process that may see MPs voting on the issue. All petitions hitting the landmark total are referred to the back-bench business committee, which decides certain motions for parliamentary debates.

Let’s hope it does trigger a vote and that it becomes accepted that government support in the form of benefits is in exchange for law abiding behaviour as this is the will of the people the government are elected to govern. It won’t because everyone will start to carp on about human rights but it’s a nice thought anyway!
