Who provides security consultancy for private homes in London?
Sectech UK, a private security company based at 11-12 Old Bond Street in Mayfair, provides security consultancy for private homes across London, including Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Kensington, Belgravia, Chelsea, Holland Park and Hampstead. A consultant assesses the threats to the family and the home, reviews the security, staff and procedures already in place, and sets out written recommendations in order of priority. Sectech can then help specify and oversee the work, with NDAs on request.
This page is for families, family offices and their advisers deciding whether to bring in a security consultant: what an engagement includes, who it suits, how it relates to a home security risk assessment, and what happens once the report is written.

What a Security Consultant Does
Most families come to security one problem at a time: a burglary nearby, a story in the press, a new house, a child starting at a new school. Each problem tends to be solved by whoever sells the obvious answer, whether that is an alarm company, a guarding firm or a builder. Nobody is asked to look at the whole picture.
A security consultant does exactly that. The job is judgement rather than equipment: understanding what the family is actually exposed to, deciding what is worth doing about it and in what order, and making sure the work that follows does what it was meant to. Good advice often means doing less than you expected, in the right places, and it should leave the household easier to run, not harder.
The engagement
What a Consultancy Engagement Includes
Every engagement is shaped around the family, but most follow the same course.
A first confidential conversation
It starts with a private conversation about you: who lives in the home, how the household runs, what has prompted the enquiry and anything that has happened before. Nothing is recommended at this stage. The aim is to agree what the consultancy should cover and who in the family or the family office will be the point of contact.
A threat and vulnerability assessment
The consultant then looks at who might want to cause the family harm, embarrassment or loss, and how they might go about it. That takes in the principals' public profile and digital footprint, the value of what is in the home, any known disputes or unwanted attention, and the points where the family's routines are easiest to read.
A survey of the residence and the family's routines
The home is surveyed in person: the perimeter, doors and windows, lighting, entrances used by staff and deliveries, and the rooms that matter most. Routines are looked at too, from the school run to travel days, because a family is most exposed when it is on the move.
A review of existing systems, staff and procedures
Most homes already have something in place: an alarm, cameras, access control, a guard, household staff with their own habits. The consultant checks whether each part works, whether anyone is watching it, and whether staff know what to do when something goes wrong.
Written recommendations in priority order
The findings are set out in a written report, with practical recommendations ranked by how much each one reduces the risk. The family can act on the most important first, and on the rest as time and building work allow.
Help specifying and procuring the work
Where the recommendations call for building or installation, such as a panic room, CCTV, access control or better lighting, the consultant can help write the specification and review the quotes, so that what is installed matches what the home needs.
Oversight while it is delivered
Security work is easily diluted on site: a door specified to one standard and fitted to another, or a camera moved to suit the decorators. Oversight during delivery keeps the work to the specification and checks it before sign-off.
Periodic review
Threats change, families grow, staff come and go and homes are renovated. A periodic review keeps the plan current, so that the security put in place still fits the way the family lives.
Who it is for
Who Security Consultancy Is For
- Private residences: prime London homes, country houses and second homes, whether occupied, staffed or standing empty for part of the year. Where a home needs people on site, residential security in London covers manned teams.
- High-net-worth families: households where wealth, a public profile or a business brings attention, and where the children, the staff and the travel all need thinking about together.
- Family offices: the people who run a family's affairs and want one considered view across several homes, people and journeys. Our family office security page explains how that is coordinated.
- Principals who travel: people whose risk does not stay at home. Advice on routes, hotels and arrivals can lead into close protection when the risk calls for officers on the ground.
Sectech advise across London, from Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Kensington to Hampstead, Highgate and Richmond, in the home counties including Surrey, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, and for families with homes abroad.
Consultancy or assessment
Security Consultancy or a Home Security Risk Assessment?
The two are related, and many consultancy engagements begin with one. A home security risk assessment is a defined piece of work: one property is inspected, the risks are identified and a written report sets out what to do about them.
Consultancy is the wider relationship around it. It can cover several homes, the people as well as the buildings, the family's travel and its staff, and it carries on after the report: helping to specify the work, overseeing it while it is done and reviewing the plan as circumstances change. If you need to know where a single home stands, start with the assessment. If you want someone to hold the whole picture over time, that is consultancy.
Working together
Working With Your Existing Team and Contractors
A consultant should strengthen what is already working, not replace it. Where a home has its own security team, a head of security, an installer it trusts or a house manager who runs everything, the consultant works alongside them: a fresh viewpoint often notices what familiarity hides, and it gives the people already in place an outside check on their plan.
On a renovation or new build, the same applies to the architect, the main contractor and the specialist installers. Security is simpler and neater to build in than to add afterwards, so the earlier the consultant is involved, the less it disrupts the design.
Confidentiality
Confidential by Default
A security consultant learns more about a family than almost anyone outside it: the layout of the home, the routines, the staff, the weak points. That information is handled on a need-to-know basis, reports go only to the people the family names, and non-disclosure agreements are available on request.
Choosing a consultant
Questions to Ask Any Security Consultant
- Who will carry out the work, and will you meet them before you instruct?
- What will the report cover, and how are the recommendations prioritised?
- Are the recommendations tied to products or services the firm sells, and if so, can you choose someone else to deliver them?
- Where the advice leads to officers on site, do those officers hold SIA licences? Anyone supplied under contract as a close protection officer, door supervisor, security guard or CCTV operator needs one, and you can check each licence free on the SIA's public register.
- How are the people who will have access to your home screened? Ask whether vetting follows BS 7858, the British Standard for security screening of individuals.
- How will your information be stored, who will see the report, and will they sign an NDA?
frequently asked questions
Security consultancy
What does a security consultant do?
A security consultant looks at the whole picture of a family's or a home's security and advises what to do about it. That usually means a confidential first conversation, an assessment of the threats and vulnerabilities, a survey of the home and the family's routines, a review of the systems, staff and procedures already in place, and written recommendations in order of priority. The consultant can then help specify the work, oversee it while it is delivered and review the plan as circumstances change.
How is security consultancy different from a risk assessment?
A home security risk assessment is a defined piece of work: one property is inspected and a written report sets out the risks and what to do about them. Consultancy is the wider relationship around it. It can cover several homes, the people, travel and staff, and it continues after the report, through specifying and overseeing the work to periodic review. Many consultancy engagements begin with a risk assessment.
Do you work with our existing security team or installers?
Yes. Where a home already has a security team, a head of security, trusted installers or a house manager, the consultant works alongside them rather than replacing them. On a renovation or new build, that includes the architect, the main contractor and specialist installers, so security is built into the design rather than added afterwards.
Is the work confidential, and are NDAs available?
Yes. Information about the family, the home and its routines is handled on a need-to-know basis, and reports go only to the people the family names. Non-disclosure agreements are available on request.
What happens after the report?
The family decides which recommendations to act on, usually starting with those ranked highest. Sectech can help write the specification for any building or installation work, such as a panic room or CCTV, review the quotes, oversee the work while it is delivered and check it before sign-off. A periodic review then keeps the plan up to date as the family, the home and the threats change.
