We all love a holiday, right? As we should. Travelling the country, and the world is exciting. You get to meet new people, see new places, experience new cultures and just enjoy and soak in the incredible world we live in.
However, whether you’re visiting one of the Seven Wonders of the World, surfing on the coast or perhaps catching some rays in the Bahamas, safety should always be your priority. Anyone who watches the news will no doubt be well aware that travelling and holidaymaking come with an element of risk.

At Sec-Tech, we’re no strangers to risk, and we’re no strangers to keeping people safe. So here are six top travel tips for keeping yourself safe whilst travelling…
- Keep your location and plans to yourself
Let’s get straight to it. As tempting as it is to post your full agenda on Instagram, this could give potential criminals access to your whereabouts. Keep your plans to yourself and your close friends and family, and don’t share your location whilst on holiday. Wait until you’re home to share all those snaps.
- Do a bit of research
This is one for before you’ve even set off… do your research! Take some time to read up on your destination – try and find out where the ‘seedy’ spots are, and where the safe spots are. Make sure you have all your important documents (passport, insurance paperwork, etc.) handy and back them up online if possible, too.
- Stay humble and dress wisely
This is a polite way of saying don’t wear expensive, high-profile jewellery or clothes. Save these for special occasions at home. Most crimes are opportunistic – i.e. a thief sees your watch and goes for it. Don’t make yourself a target by wearing flashy gear.
- Keep an eye on your glass!
This feels like the disclaimer at the end of a TV advert, but it’s seriously good advice. In fact, we can’t emphasise this one enough – be sensible with your drinking and keep your eye on your drink.
- Don’t keep your money in one place
This is a simple tip, but it’s a good one. Keep your cash in different (and ideally secure) places so if some get lost or stolen, you will have a backup supply.
